Along with the database appication system's rapid popularization, Data warehousing has emerged as the most profound change in information systems.A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant and nonvolatile collection of data in support of management'decision making process.Data warehousing is not a new platform* but a new concept. Meanwhile it is not a product, but a solution. It provides decision-maker a single analysis environment, in which information from multiple heterogeneous sources is transformed and integrated in advance and stored in a warehouse.A traditional database system is processing-oriented and is designed based-on business processes and system functions, including a great deal of current detail data. On the other hand, Data warehousing is analysis-oriented, including high-quality, clean, integrated data. Operational databases provide data warehouse a lot of raw data, while data warehousing is established on the basis of databases. Consequently data warehousing is not an alternative to the database system. Each of them has different functions and completes different tasks.On-line analytical processing (OLAP) is a classical application of data warehousing for the interactive analysis of multidimensional data of varied granularities. Moreover, OLAP supports some multidimensional analytical operations, such as slice-, dice> roll-up> drill-down and rotate,which provide users with the flexibility to view data from different perspectives.In 2000, author took part into the design of the Network Information System of Steel Company in LiuZhou based-on traditional database system. The information system made the process of sales business automatization, which changed traditional handwork mode, improved work efficiency and quality of server. However, because of the limit of traditional database systems, the Information system lacked efficiency and flexibility in making report. At the same time, it was difficult for advanced managers to find useful decision-making information from a mass of detail data. By-in-introducing the advanced theories and technologies of data warehouse and OLAP, a prototype of data warehouse is constructed to meet users'requirements. It realizes automatic data collecting^ storage and presenting .In this paper, theories and technologies of data warehouse and OLAP are introduced. Then the detail designing procedure of the prototype is discussed by means of an example. An effective modeling of data warehouse in the field of marketing is put forward, which is useful for constructing other data warehouse prototypes in the future.
