Streaming media is a multimedia communication technology that has recently been developed for efficient multimedia transmission through Internet. With this technology the multimedia information can be displayed while it is being downloaded, so that the users do not have to waste their time when downloading, and there will be a radically reduced need in the system memory capacity. The technology can be applied to many Internet information services.Coming from a need in network education, the research project the thesis discusses is to stream and multicast AVI files. The thesis includes the following three parts:1.The first part analyzes bandwidth use of AVI stream according to the characteristics of AVI files. There are two parts of the bandwidth use, one is for media data, which can be reduced by effective compression, the other is for controlling information, which is essential to streaming media technology. As the latter occupies too large a part of the bandwidth use, streaming AVI files is not practical. The thesis puts forth a system solution to the problem by cutting the index in the controlling information.2. The second part discusses multicast streaming media. The writer of the thesis has worked out a multicast model based on the Internet transmission mechanism and explained the IP Multicast which is the basis of multicast through Internet. Based on the study of the recent streaming media protocol and analysis of the QoS and multimedia synchronization problems in ASMS, the writer brings forth a transmission controlling method in ASMS.3. The third part discusses the technique of real time display of AVI files without index information. This technique is based on DirectShow technology. The thesis first analyzes the structure and main technique points of DirectShow, and then puts forth a real time display model for AVI stream. The working mechanism and realization of the model is discussed, and the realization of the two specific filters used in ASMS is given out in detail.The main contribution of this thesis:·As the bandwidth cost is fully considered and solved in ASMS, ASMS is practical.·ASMS gets a good experimental result. It successfully multicasts streaming AVI, and the real time display quality at receiver is quite ideal.·ASMS can be widely used in network education and other Internet services.
