With the rapid increasing of network bandwidth, multimedia data and its real-timetransmission, processing, and applications has been becoming one of the key researchareas of modern network technology; Meanwhile, distance education system gainsmore and more widespread applications for both school and social education. The studyof streaming media and its transmission will not only widen the scope of streamingmedia and network technology, but also enrich the contents of multimedia application. It would have a profound influence on the software industry. The thesis focused on several problems in Streaming Media's transmission,i.e.how the quality of service was influenced by dynamically allocated bandwidth andhow to implement it based on RTP/RTCP. In the thesis, based on thorough comparison of different media file format andmeans of data processing, DivX and MPEG-Layer-3 were selected as the best choiceof video and audio CODEC. The related network protocols including RTP/RTCP andTCP/IP were introduced and analyzed in this paper. Meanwhile, some implementationproblems were discussed, and a media transmission solution with multi-cast based onRTP/RTCP was presented. With distance education as the application background, in this thesis, a prototypefor real time transmission of multimedia data has been designed and implemented. Itis intended to process real-time video and audio data over IP network. The applicationsoftware prototype was designed based on DirectShow and multithreadingprogramming. With the quality of service and reusability as the design goals, theprototype can meet the requirements of some distance education systems.
