With the improvement of Chinese people抯 living standard and development of the nationwide body-building campaign, sports culture has been moving into the people抯 life, and news reports on sports are getting more attracting to the public. In the mean time, media have attached greater importance to the news coverage on sports. Over the past several years, various kinds of specialized newspapers and magazines have emerged rapidly in large numbers, and most of the traditional catch all newspapers made efforts to improve layout on sports coverage. In the late 1990s, with the development of information technology, especially the rapid growth of Internet industry, the competition of sports reports became white-hot. Under such competitive conditions, how to improve the sports coverage and develop the superiority of the newspaper has become a question with great importance. The dissertation analyses the characteristics and superiority of sports coverage of the newspaper, and makes efforts trying to discuss the weak points that still exist, and, puts forward suggestions on improving sports coverage of the newspaper.
