Along with the development of teaching reform in higher educational institutions in china, carrying out research-based teaching has become a trend of teaching reform in higher educational institutions at present. Teaching is a bilateral activity of teachers and students; "teaching" can not do without "learning". Based on the characteristics of research-based teaching, the conduct of research-based teaching needs cooperate from students whose learning style was self-study in order to achieve the optimal effect of teaching. Therefore, the teacher must actively guide students to self-study when they conduct research-based teaching. But the current situation of college students' self-study is not satisfactory; teachers did not give full play on the role of guiding students to self-study, and most students just followed the teacher to study. Their dependence on teachers is strong, and the state of their self-study is relatively poor. The purpose of this paper is that guiding students to self-study effectively when carrying out research-based teaching. This paper makes a profound analysis on the current research situation of research-based teaching and self-study both at home and abroad, the theoretical connotation of research-based teaching and self-study, the relation of teaching and learning in research-based teaching, as well as the interaction between research-based teaching and self-study, then we found out the problem existing between the two aspects through the survey on teachers'research-based teaching and students' self-study. After that, the strategy was proposed to guide students to self-study for every teaching step, namely, the preparatory phase of teaching, classroom teaching, practice teaching, class work and guidance activities, academic appraisal, and so on. Chapter V demonstrated the teaching application and evaluation of teaching effects about the strategy of guiding students to self-study presented earlier in "mechanical CAD Technology" course. Finally, a summary of this research and reflection of inadequacies are discussed.
