The economic globalization and the coming of the era of information is challenging traditional basic education. There are many problems in English teaching, among which is the loss of humanistic spirit, which is not to be neglected.At present English education is still test-oriented in many places in China, so English is taught and learned only as a tool for passing the exams, which leads to the fact that examination marks are highly valued while the development of the students in other aspects is neglected.If too much emphasis is laid on the teaching of knowledge instead of non-intelligence factors such as affect,attitude, personality and interest, we can not expect to cultivate all-round developed talents, which is againt China's educational purposes. Considering the trend of reform and development of English teaching, the writer of this thesis tries to find out a solution to this problem , that is, to cultivate humanistic spirit using English songs so as to lay a foundation for the harmonious development of the students.Sdudents can learn a lot about culture of the target language, the love of life and nature , the appreciation of beauty as well as how to be a better person in society and how to solve problems met in daily life. It is also a fact that listening to English songs is very helpful in improveing one's English.The writer of this thesis has found out through many interviews and questionnaires that teaching English songs in senior middls schools can satisfy the needs of studnets of this age group. Pracice has proved that song teaching and learning is efficient in improving the students'listening, speaking ,reading and writing skills and cultivating humanistic spirit.The writer of the thesis elatorates the connotation of humanistic spirit and its historical origin,and the necessity of cultivating humanistic spirit in English teaching by way of song teaching as well as the practical value and theoretical basis of song teaching in languange learning.Besides, the writer stresses the elementary principles of selecting songs, and the strategies and methods of cultivating humanistic spirit in"the seven-step approach"of song teaching in the senior middle school, and the concrete application in the classroom.After a discussion from aspects of theory and practice, the writer draws the following conclusion: English song teaching is one of the efficient ways to cultivate the students'humanistic spirit.
