A Multiple Perspective Of Demonstrative Pronoun "Zheyang" And Its Collocations

In modern Chinese,"zheyang"is a demonstrative pronoun which is used with high frequency, and its collocations have the features of a compact and steady structure."zheyang"and its collocations has a very important position and role in cohesion and coherence in text. And they also have special pragmatic and discourse functions."zheyang"has flexible positions, multiple functions and regular semantic directions, it can't be replaced in some collocations."zheyang"has proximal deixis, but it also has semantic grammaticalization which could be proved by its phonetics. It is highly valuable for theoretical study and application.This thesis is going to divided"zheyang"into typical and atypical demonstrative pronoun, and compares them in phonetic, semantic and pragmatic, try to give tentative explanations to its grammaticalization.In introduction, it concludes the demarcation of the objects of the research, the subject's significance, the research of the pioneers, the theories and methods and the corpus used in the thesis. The main text has four chapters, the former two investigate the grammatical and semantic functions of"zheyang"and its collocations; the later two investigate the phonetic differences, the discourse and pragmatic functions of them.In Chapterâ… there is a detailed investigation of"zheyang"'s positions and functions in sentences, and also analysis on its semantic directions.In Chapterâ…¡,the collocations of"zheyang"are investigated, including their grammatical and discourse positions, and the functions of"zheyang"in these collocations compared with"nayang".In Chapterâ…¢,the semantic functions of"zheyang"and its collocations are investigated, typical and atypical"zheyang"are compared by their phonetics to make explanations for their semantic differences. In Chapterâ…£,it investigates"zheyang"and its collocations'dicourse and pragmatic functions, also make investigations on its discourse marker functions.Chapterâ…¤is the epilogue, concluding the conclusions and a further discussion of these questions.In accordance with the four chapters above, we have tendentious conclusions below:1. The demonstrative pronoun"zheyang"can serve as subject, predicate, object, attribute, adverbial and complement, it also can be parenthesis. It has two semantic functions.2. There are four functions of"zheyang"'s semantic directions. These features are clearly and orderly.3. The parenthesis structures of"zheyang"are steady and compact, in these collocations,"zheyang"has strong expressions of connecting and undemonstrative functions, and it can't be replaces in them.4.The demonstrative pronoun"zheyang"has semantic functions including expressing known information, referring to the theme, expressing the past/future tense, affirmative judgment and imaginary meaning expressing functions.5. The demonstrative pronoun"zheyang"has semantic intervention function when its collocations serve as parenthesis. The influences to the sentences'meaning are changed by the positions.6. The phonetic forms of"zheyang"are related to its semantic features. The pronunciations of typical and atypical ones are different. It is not only for colloquial expressions but also for semantic and pragmatic functions.7. The most important functions of"zheyang"and its collocations including pragmatic and discourse functions, also it can serves as discourse markers.
