This paper aims to study the different pragmatics functions of discoursemarkers such as well, oh, you know and man, and their translation under differentcontext, through analyzing examples in Helping by Robert Stone. Through study, thewriter concludes that it is very important for a translator to first identify theillocutionary function of a discourse marker like well, oh, you know and man in thesource text and then to retain the same function in its target text by using appropriateChinese expressions, thus achieving functional equivalence.
