As one of the most complicated human activities, translation has attracted the interests of numerous scholars. As a result, several theories and methods have been put forward to explain the nature of human translation and guide the daily translation work. Although lots of books and articles have been published recently, it seems that many scholars still concentrated on what happened in the translation process rather than how this process happens. Although some scholars have noticed the decoding procedure of source text (ST), some scholars establish models to study and describe translation process, even the mental faculties of translators. However, these models just touch the operation level of translation process. As we all know, the complete translation procedure includes not only the words transfer but, more importantly, the analyzing and understanding (decoding) of the source text. Few practical methods and models were developed to guide translator to decode the ST. Fortunately, in literature criticism field, literary theories have been used to analyze different genres of literature works. Can we borrow these theories or methods to help our ST analysis? Based on this idea, this thesis intends to use modem narrative theory to develop a comparative new model to help the analyzing and decoding of ST of ancient Chinese narrative poetry.Although lyric poem occupied the main position of traditional ancient Chinese poetry, narrative poem, because of its unique style and function, still holds an important position in literature field. From Shijing ( 《诗经》) to Yuefu (乐府) in Han Dynasty, followed by the brilliant narrative poetry in Tang Dynasty, narrative techniques and contents of poetry got sufficient development. All of these achievements in narrative practice contribute a lot to the development of ancient Chinese novels and operas.
