With the advent of the era of globalization, the movie industries pay great attention to the film′s global allocation of resources.Especially the Hollywood′s globalization strategy not only absorbs foreign cultural resources, but also adapts successful exotic commercial films. The Departed is a good example. The Departed originated from the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. The former won the Academy Award, but the latter could not be approved by Hollywood. It is because the Academy Award itself is the peak of the United States films and Infernal Affairs as a heterogeneous culture film has encountered obstacles in a cross-cultural communication process. While the director of The Departed Martin Scorsese adapted the film,he conformed to a adaption strategy loved by American audiences. The thesis regards film as a text of cross-cultural communication visual field.Through the comparison between The Departed and Infernal Affairs,it will analyze American mainstream ideology and communication way in the The Departed,Hollywood film characteristic and individuation style of directors concretely, then will apply second encoding theory rooting in Stuart Hall encoding / decoding theory to the research of adaption strategy of The Departed. As a result,we find that in the process of adapting film,Martin Scorsese puts up second encoding in the American dominant reading way.In this way, this adaption keeps to the entertainment needs and taste tropism of the American, besides,it syncretizes the director's cultural attribute and film style. The thesis consists of four parts:Chapter One is the introduction, including the presentation of the question, the value of research, what have been investigated about the question at home and aboard and the innovation of this thesis;the theme and narrative style of Infernal Affairs will be discussed in the chapter Two;Chapter Three is the research of cross-cultural adaptation of The Departed;Chapter Four is to analyze the strategy and result of adaptation of The Departed by applying second encoding theory.
