A jinshi is an official in court and a gentry when out of office. They are deeply edified by Confucius books and enjoy a higher level of education in the society, therefore, their political function and cultural function are important in traditional Chinese society and can be called the elite in the traditional society. On the other hand, under the stimulation and inducement of Western capitalist countries, the traditional Chinese society gradually disintegrated after 1840 and began to transform into modem times. In the course of transformation, most striking is the change of Jinshi in late Qing Dynasty, which is a crucial part of ruling class in traditional Chinese society and principal inheritor of Chinese traditional culture. The thesis focuses on the study of jinshi of Gansu. Firstly, it reviews the number and geographical distribution of jinshi of Gansu in Qing Dynasty in order to reveal the regional society and cultural environment of its growth;secondly, it studies jinshi of Gansu in late Qing Dynasty as the model of traditional intellectuals in backward regions and examine their change in modern China;thirdly, it expatiates their deeds by means of their respective role as an official and a gentry in order to show their achievement and influence.Due to the small number of jinshi of Gansu in Qing Dynasty and its unique humanist and geographical environment, jinshi of Gansu in Qing Dynasty did not have great impact in the whole country, and the transformation during modern times was comparatively slow, yet the spirit of patriotism is praiseworthy.
