| Anything has its name and all the things link to a language through the way that named by nouns. The main study subject of this thesis is one class of nouns which is called Modern Chinese monosyllabic nouns. As the basis of Modern Chinese Dictionary, we collect, sort out and analyze all the monosyllabic nouns exhaustively. This thesis is divided into five parts that discuss the overview, the categories, the Semantic, the Pragmatic as well as the thinking about Modern Chinese monosyllabic nouns in varying degrees. And the discussion especially focuses on three intermediate chapters. Counting up the number of Modern Chinese monosyllabic nouns is rather an enormous and hard work to what that we spend nearly a month and collect 2941 words. Some of the words are usually used, but some are uncommon. In one hand, we classify all the monosyllabic nouns according to the standard of meaning's number. The result tells us that single-meaning words are the most and the number of words reduces with the increase of meaning's number. In the other hand, we classify some of the monosyllabic nouns according to the standard of attributes of things. It reflects that the large collections of Modern Chinese monosyllabic nouns contain some small collections, such as last names, chemical elements, animals, plants and place names. Monosyllabic nouns are not only stationary names of things, but also play role in the levels of Semantic and Pragmatic. We put some part of words into Semantic field, Corpus and Chinese idioms to analyze their news, and we also put some of them into specific contexts to discuss their relation with polysyllabic words or rhetoric. At last, this thesis analyses Modern Chinese monosyllabic nouns with the dependence feature of Chinese character, reflects on the aspects of character relationships and future development, and then makes a conclusion. |
