The Clinical Application Of Serum Erythropoietin And The Expression Of The Erythropoietin Receptor In Patients With Prostate Cancer

Objective: To investigate the clinical significance of the serum levels of erythropoietin in patients with prostate cancer(PCa) and the expression of the erythropoietin receptor in tissues of PCa.Methods:We analyzed the preoperative serum EPO concentrations in 35 patients with first PCa, 12 patients with Pca after anti-androgen therapy, 20 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia(BPH) and 15 healthy men using ELISA method. The expression of EPOR in first PCa(35cases) and BPH(20cases) were detected by immunohistochemistry assay. The clinical information include T-PSA,Gleason score and TNM classification was collected. Statistic tests was used to determine the statistical significance of serum EPO levels. We also study the correlation between the EPOR expression in first PCa and their clinicopathological characteristics.Results: The mean serum levels of EPO were significantly elevated in patients with first PCa compared with patients with BPH and healthy men. The mean serum levels of EPO were also significantly elevated in patients with PCa after anti-androgen therapy compared with patients with first PCa. There was no statistically significant correlation between EPO and PSA(r=0.025,P=0.887>0.05)as well as Gleason score (r=0.221,P=0.202>0.05)in patients with first PCa. The mean EPO level in stagesâ…¢+â…£was higher than those in stagesâ… +â…¡. The diference between them were statistically significant (P<0.05). The expression of EPOR in first PCa tissue was significantly elevated compared with those in BPH tissue(P<0.05). The mean serum level of EPO in patients with PCa was positive relation with the expression of EPOR in PCa tissue (r=0.376, P=0.026<0.05). Conclusion: 1. The mean serum level of EPO in patients with first PCa and were higher than those in patients with BPH and healthy men,The serum level of EPO can be an important assistance measure for Pca diagnose; 2. The mean serum EPO level in stagesâ…¢+â…£was higher than those in stagesâ… +â…¡. The high expression of serum EPO was significantly related with the clinical staging. EPO may play a important role in the growth of PCa. Clinical stage, invasion , metastasis may reference to serum EPO level; 3. The mean serum EPO level in PCa patients after anti-androgen therapy was higher than first PCa patients, EPO may be involved in PCa androgen-independent transformation; 4.The of EPOR was obviously expressed in PCa tissue. There are positive regulation between EPOR score and serum EPO level. EPOR also can provide clinical application worth for PCa diagnose.
