This research investigates nursing students'professional identity and its development. It also aims at exploring and analysing the factors which influencing students'identity formation and accordingly providing relevant policy implications.A questionnaire was conducted to the students from School of Nursing, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and interviews were conducted to 13 students. The findings suggest that the students had a rather moderate identity towards nursing profession. Senior students tended to have a weaker professional identity than the junior students, in particular in terms of their views on social status and career development. However, there was no statistic significance found between the male and female students'views. The analysis of the interviews shows that there are two kinds of students'professional identity formations. Results also shows that different factors have influenced the students'identity formation and their views on nursing profession, namely, significant others will have great influence on them, such as family member and teachers, study and working conditions, curriculum and career prospects.
