Objectives:"Resistance strengthened & pathogenic wind removed" (RSPWR) infusion was created by Chief Physician Li Hao and had gained satisfactory clinical effect in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR). We investigate the effectiveness of RSPWR infusion to substance P from nasal discharge, so that to reveal the mechanism of its effectiveness from neuroimmunology, to provide new ideas and methods for the improvement of the therapeutic effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).Methods:Established diagnostic, including, excluding and evaluating criteria of AR. One hundred patients included were divided equally and randomly into therapeutic and control groups. Patients in therapeutic group were orally administrated with RSPWR infusion according to the regimen of 10g twice a day after meal. Patients in control group were orally administrated with Jade Screen infusion according to the regimen of 5g twice a day after meal. Symptoms, syndromes and substance P from nasal discharge were investigated before and after treatment.Results:1. Excellence rate, effective power and total effective rate in therapeutic group were 46%,28% and 74% respectively.2. Total score of symptoms and syndromes were significantly decreased after treatment in both groups (P<0.05). Total score of symptoms and syndromes were significantly lower in therapeutic group than that in control group.3. Volume of nasal discharge in therapeutic group before treatment was 1.42±0.38ml, in which substance P volume was 35.79±10.03ng/mL. After treatment, volume of nasal discharge in therapeutic group was 1.12±0.29ml, in which substance P volume was 35.96±11.73ng/mL. In control group, volume of nasal discharge before treatment was 1.38±0.35ml, in which substance P volume was 35.96±11.73ng/mL. After treatment, volume of nasal discharge in control group was 1.25±0.34ml, in which substance P volume was 31.76±9.17ng/mL. Volume of substance P between two groups did not show any statistical significant difference before treatment (P>0.05). After treatment, substance P volume decreased significantly as self-compare, especially in therapeutic group, indicating that both treatments can decrease the volume of substance P, and the effect in therapeutic group was better than control group.4. No adverse effect occurred during treatment. Conclusions:According to our results, therapeutic effect of RSPWR infusion is better than Jade Screen infusion in reducing the volume of substance P. It shows that RSPWR infusion may exhibit its satisfactory therapeutic effect in AR by reducing the volume of substance P, thus inhibit the subsequent pathophysiological reactions. There is little adverse effect in the administration of RSPWR infusion in routine dosage. It can be further developed and applied to the therapy of AR.
