ObjectivesThis study aimed to identify the mastery and needs of community nursing knowledge, and analyze the influential factors in order to provide scientific reference for relevant department as to develop appropriate job training planning, training content and training methods that are suitable to particular community nurses, by investigating general condition and post-training status of community nurses in Shenyang City, and assessing their cognition and needs for post-trainingMethodsThis study was descriptive. A self-designed questionnaire was administered to a cluster sample of community nurses working in five districts including Heping District, Shenhe District, Huanggu District, Dadong District and Tiexi District in Shenyang City.Results1,General condition of community nurses in Shenyang cityThe number of population surveyed was 763, and they were all female. Nurses of 30~40 years old took up the most, nearly 47.1%.73.5%of nurses in the study were permanent nurses and 47.8%of nurses were middle rank in technical title. The educational background of these nurses was mostly associate degree and certificate, which took up 45.9%and 40.6%respectively. Before engaging in community nursing, 89.4%of nurses were clinical nurses working in hospitals, and the average time of working in hospitals was 13.24±8.29 years. The average time of working in communities was 4.34±2.97 years.73.9%of nurses considered they could be competent for community nursing. 2,Post-training status540(70.77%) community nurses accepted post-training for community nurses, among which 95.4% accepted part-time training.52.7% of training faculty were from nursing teachers. The teaching method was mostly lecture, and took up 47% of methods listed in the survey.35.9% of nurses who accepted post-training considered the effect of training very significant, and only 1.1%considered very little significant. In the survey,7 factors influencing the training effect were listed, and 23.7%of nurses who accepted post-training considered the most influential factor was difference between training content and actual working needs.3,The cognition and needs of post-training88.6% of nurses surveyed considered post-training important and were willing to take part in the training. The purposes of taking part in training were to elevate their ability of working in communities firstly, and to renew professional knowledge secondly.7 factors holding back nurses from participating in training were listed in the survey, and the first three factors in rank that influenced strongly were busy work, limits of economics in training and lack of information and opportunity.61.5% of nurses liked part-time training, and combined teaching methods throughout training. 75.2% of nurses preferred to community health center in all training settings. In addition, a small number of nurses tended to nursing home, family and school.40% of nurses wished training faculty were from nursing teachers and experienced community nurses.4,The mastery and needs of community nursing knowledgeThe worst two of community nursing knowledge in mastery were community hospice care, and community mental health and nursing management of mental disorders. The most needed among nurses was first-aid in community, followed by nursing care and rehabilitation of common chronic disease in community.5,Influencing factors Influencing factors associated with mastery of community nursing knowledge were highest educational level, initial educational level and title for technical personnel. The needs of nurses for community nursing knowledge correlated with training condition, highest educational level and duration of engaging in community work.ConclusionThis study have identified the mastery and needs of community nursing knowledge, and analyzed the influential factors in order to provide scientific reference for relevant department as to develop appropriate job training planning, training content and training methods that are suitable to particular community nurses.1,These nurses liked part-time training. They wished teaching methods combined with lecture, practice and other ways such as case analysis, literature reading, group discussion, and so on. Nurses tended to community health center, hospital, nursing home, family and school.2,The worst three of community nursing knowledge in mastery were community hospice care, community mental health and nursing management of mental disorders, and community health care of special population. The first three needed in rank were first-aid in community, nursing care and rehabilitation of common chronic diseases, and nursing care of common infectious diseases and handling of public health emergencies. The knowledge of bad mastery and high demand should be emphasized.3,On the basis of extending working content and working form, managers should encourage community health nurses to elevate education level and technical title, and enroll persons with high education level and high technical title to wok with community health nursing.
