Objective To investigate the status and influencing factors of knowledge, attitude and practice(KAP) about AIDS among miners at Huainan and to provide evidence for constituting strategies and measures for AIDS health education and behavioral intervention. The effect of behavioral intervention was evaluated for prevention of AIDS among the coal miners. Methods Using cluster sampling, 1180 coal miners were surveyed with questionnaire about family function(APGAR), alcohol dependence(MAST) and so on in two mines of Huainan in Anhui Province. After health education, coal miners were surveyed with questionnaire about AIDS in 2 mines. Health education activity was conducted to provide health knowledge for coal miners during one year, including health education courses, providing free consultation, playing video, handing out playing card and booklet including the education materials for preventing AIDS and so on.Results The prevalence of alcohol drinking was 85.51% in miners and the prevalence of alcohol dependence was 94.1% in drinking miners. With aggravation of alcohol dependence status, the incidence of sexual intercourse outside marriage raised while the incidence of using condom in sexual intercourse outside marriage declined. The proportion of family dysfunction was 35.99%. The analysis of the multivariable logistic regression showed that the association between AIDS/HIV related attitude, sexual behavior and family function was statistically significant.Coal miners had better status of AIDS knowledge, but the rates of some knowledge points are lower. The results of intervention showed that knowledge, attitude and behavior about AIDS among the coal miners have been significantly improved by comparing the relevant indexes before and after intervention. The proportion of those miners who admitted having non-marital sex among three months before survey was decreased from 29.37% to 8.97%.Conclusions Coal miners are potential high risk population for HIV/AIDS.AIDS health education and behavioral intervention work should be carried out imminently. The behavior intervention for coal miners was effective measures in AIDS prevention and control. Improving status of alcohol dependence and family function may be a effective way to prevent HIV/AIDS in coal miners.
