Chronic gastritis and gastroduodenal ulcer, other than occupational diseases are among the most common causes of sick leave among coal miners, due to the unique working and living conditions. As a result, huge economic loss to the coal industry has been observed, but few papers have been published on that issue so far. The purpose of this study is to seek protection on the health of coal miners, and to search for competent preventive measures, risk factors related to the diseases for that targeted occupational population.Three coal mines, Tangshan, Daxing and Baodian, have been chosen countrywide with stratified randomized sampling method. Cross-sectional study was carried out among 109, 112 and 80 coal miners, who worked underground, with another 55, 41 and 30, who were engaging in ground jobs as controls. Each subject was interviewed using a unified questionnaire. One senior gastroscopist with two assistants using the same set of gastroscope did all the gastroscopic diagnosis, according to the Sydney system of diagnosis to undergo the quality control.
