Investigation Of Nutritional And Psychological Status Of Elderly Residents In Shenyang Nursing Home

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the nutritional, healthy and psychological status and to analyze their associated factors in elderly nursing home residents in Shenyang. And this result is helpful to the improvement of the living conditions of the elderly and the promotion of the development of undertakings for the aged. Some proposed recommendations will be released for improving the life quality of elderly people.Methods: 160 elder men was investigated by the cross-sectional study (males 89, females 71, 78.8±8.8years old) in Shenyang nursing home from March to April in 2008. A dietary survey was taken by using the food weighting method within 3 consecutive days. The physical examination was also performed, and the blood glucose, lipids and hemoglobin was also examined in fasting blood samples. Nutritional knowledge, attitudes and practice was assessed by the method of questionnaire which was made by ourselves based on"Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents"and"Balance Dietary Pagoda for Chinese Residents". Subjective Well- being (SWB) was measured by using the self-rating measuring scales Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness (MUNSH).Results: 1). The average daily intake of cereals, vegetable, fruit, legume, poultry, milk, egg, aquatic food, oil and salt was 327.6g, 316.8g, 29.8g, 35.0g, 74.7g, 34.1g, 61.3g, 3.6g, and 30g respectively. When compared with recommended nutrient intake (RNI), The percentage of average daily intake of energy was 104% and 103% in males and females respectively, the percentage of protein was 108% and 105%, that of vitamin BB1 was 98.3% and 93.1%, that of vitamin B2 was 66.4% and 61.4%, that of vitamin C was 66.1% and 70.5%, that of Ca was 47.4% and 47.0%, that of Fe was 126% and 112.7%, respectively. 55.5%, 30.2% and 14.3% of the total energy was provided by was carbohydrate, fat and protein respectively. 34.2% of the dietary protein was high quality protein. 26.8%, 40.0% and 33.2% of daily energy source was from breakfast, lunch and supper respectively.2). The morbidity of malnutrition, overweight or obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia and anemia was 6.4%, 39.1%, 46.8%, 40.8%, 11.3% and 14.8% respectively.3). Nutritional knowledge, attitudes and practice. The overall awareness rate of nutrition knowledge was 23.8% in the elderly and it was affected by education level. 88.8% of the elderly was interested in learning nutrition and health knowledge. The ways to learn nutrition knowledge was through lecture (41.9%), radio and television (37.5%), newspaper and magazine (12.5%), friend (3.1%). 40% of the elderly would considered to modify their dietary habit, but 43.8% not.4). The total score of SWB was 37.23±9.69 in the elderly. The average score of the positive and the negative factors was 16.19±6.43 and 2.97±5.32 respectively. The sex, ages, marital status, education level, sleeping time and incomes did not affect SWB (P>0.05). Based on the logistic regression analysis, it was found that chronic diseases decreased SWB, and Loving life in nursing home, recreational activities, voluntary for nursing homes and communication with offspring could increased SWB.Conclusions: The study has revealed that the elderly man in nursing home of shenyan is in the higher status of SWB, but theirs dietary components is not scientific, the morbidity of chronic diseases is high, and they has less of nutritional knowledge. It is helpful to improve the life quality of elderly by performing more lectures of nutrition, psychology and heath knowledge, adjusting dietary structure and increasing recreational activities.
