It is a growing problem that violence in the nursing workplace in China. It has been showed that workplace violence may caused harm not only physically and mentally to victims but also a negative influence on the nuring profession. Studies about the nursing workplace violence in Western countries started at the eighties of the last century, however, it has not been studied very well in China, especially little is known about outcomes of victims suffering workplace violence in China. We aim to study the patterns, severity and outcomes of incidents of workplace violence among nurses in a integrative hospital in Changsha city, and analyze the risk factors of violence in nursing. Correlation analysis between personality traits of nurses and the rate of violence will be utilized in this study.AIMs1. To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of the distribution of time, space, and people of workplace violence in nursing in a general hospital in Changsha.2. To compare the difference of characteristics of socio-demography and personality traits among nurses who encountered or unencountered with workplace violence, moreover to explore potential risk factors of violence in nursing from working in different departments.3. To analyze whether the personality traits of nurses can influence the rate of violence happened in the workplace, and explore how to prevent and reduce workplace violence occur.METHODS1. In this study, we designed a questionnaire about the workplace violence against nurses firstly according to the definition of hospital violence from WHO. Random cluster sampling method was used to extract all nurses (n=389) from30sections conducted a questionnaire survey in a general hospital at Changsha, and350valid questionnaires was received. To analyze the results of this investigation, descriptive statistics, chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used.2. To detect the personality traits of the survey staff, the Big Five Personality Questionnaire (simple version) designed by our department and the questionnaire on workplace violence against nurses in the hospital was used.3. Sample size estimationAccording to the overall size of the hospital staff and the method of sampling which be used, this study extracted all nurses (n=389) from30sections randomly conducted a questionnaire survey in a general hospital in Changsha, and350valid questionnaires were received.4. Statistical analysis methodsPASW Statistics18and GraphPad Prism5were used to analyze the related risk factors, ifp<0.05sentenced for the difference was statistically significant.RESULTSIn this study, the actual completion of the investigation of350cases and found that:1. There were232nurses suffered hospital workplace violence in the past year in all nurses who have completed of the investigation, the rate of violence was62.47%, Physical violence was9.17%, Psychological violence was60.89%, and sexual harassment (verbal) rate was0.87%, respectively.2. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the probability of nurses suffered workplace violence from the hospital closely related to their work experience, education, and the departments at where the nurses worked.3. The non-parametric test showed that nurses experienced workplace violence was closely related to its five factors constitute personality traits.CONCLUSION1. The incidents of workplace violence in nursing occurred increasingly and seriously in a general hospital in Changsha, and influencing factors of workplace violence cover qualifications, working experience and departments.2The incidents of workplace violence in nursing were closely related to the personality traits and working departments of nurses.
