Background:Clinical practice is a significant part of higher medical education, an important way for medical students to assimilate the theoretical knowledge learned in classes with concrete clinical experience, and also a crucial practical period from medical students to doctors, by which the educational qualities of medical schools and growth of medical students are directly influenced.Today, higher education in our country is stepping into a period with rapid development and continuous adjustment, including quantity enlargement and quality rearrangement. In recent years, students' admission into universities and colleges has increased, and the quality of higher education has been a social focus, especially in the "Education of Elite": medical education.Clinical teaching in medical universities and colleges, which plays an important role in higher medical education, is the critical link in accomplishing specialty education and cultivating qualified senior specialists. For decades, the clinical teaching in teaching hospitals involves rotating through each department. However, the higher medical schools and teaching hospitals are now confronted with more and more problems. Could the traditional management and practice pattern achieve the expected effect? Are the interns satisfied with clinical teaching as new situations emerge including the increased number of students and increased pressure for further education and good employment? At present, little research on this topic has been done and the related studies involve only certain specialties and are not systematic reviews. Objective:An investigation has been launched using the perspectives and satisfaction of interns on the teaching infrastructure, clinical teaching quality, clinical experience and management of interns. This study involves 994 interns in 5 tertiary teaching hospitals of Shangdong University. From the study, the factors influencing the interns' practices and shortcomings about the present clinical teaching can be found; moreover, the research can provide more scientific evidence for higher medical education and clinical teaching hospitals whose goal is to transform teaching model and promote teaching quality. Methods:The subjects of this research are 994 interns majoring in Clinical Medicine from 5 tertiary teaching hospitals of Shandong University, which mainly come from Shandong University.Self-made "Questionnaire of Satisfaction of Interns" was utilized in this thesis and an investigation of anonymous questionnaires ensued. Nine hundred ninety-four copies were distributed, while 968 copies were returned, and the response rage was 97.4%; the data was processed by using EXCEL, Afterwards, we held constructive conversations with over 40 interns from the 5 teaching hospitals in order to have a further comprehension of how the interns evaluated the clinical experience.Main Results(1) Generally, interns are content with the establishment of departments and beds for teaching, and relevant equipments in teaching hospitals; while not content with the accommodations and studying conditions supplied by the hospitals. (2) Interns are content with clinical teachers' attitude and associations with clinical cases in giving lessons; average in teaching methods; while not content with the way of teaching in English and introducing more advanced knowledge. (3) Interns are content with teaching by special doctors, teaching attitude and discussions on typical cases in Internal medicine and Pediatric department, but not content within Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, and other departments; more satisfactions come from Surgery departments for the opportunities of practicing, while average in Internal medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics and Pediatric department, but dissatisfactions in other departments; however, common dissatisfactions are showed in the care for interns. (4) Interns are content with special training before entering relevant department, arrangements of practicing in turns, and consciousness of service; while not content with teaching surveillance and establishment and execution on the rules of management. Conclusion and Suggestions:Teaching hospitals can mostly satisfy all kinds of requests for clinical teaching; nevertheless, defects can be also seen in several aspects as follows. Hospitals don't have a strong teaching consciousness, and not so much attentions are put into teaching; the clinical teachers give lessons with limited methods and without enthusiasm; the teaching administration departments in hospitals are lack of surveillance on teaching conditions in each department and lack of united management, or lack of reinforced management; the teaching doctors are short of activeness, seldom have intercourse with interns; clinical teaching activities are not fully developed, so for interns, there are few opportunities for basic clinical skills practice, and many factors-getting further education, job seeking, et al.-do influence the practicing quality greatly. The suggestions that can be referred to include that increasing the input of teaching establishment, reinforce the abilities of us teachers, reforming teaching methods, regulating teaching management, improving teaching rules; in practice of interns, more practicing chances should be given; besides, strengthening the education of medical moral, setting up standardized consciousness in the working of interns, and making reasonable practice arrangement according to the situation of interns' getting further education and seeking jobs -are also significant.
