Objective: To compare the therapeutic effects of extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and phacoemulsification (PHACO) in the eyes with complicated cataract through analyzing the clinical data. Methods: From 2003 January to 2007 December, 110 patients (123 eyes) with complicated cataract were treated with Extracapsular extraction and Phacoemulsification at a mean age of 58.6 years (range from 9 to 90 years). The results of visual acuity and complications were reviewed. The visual acuities and complications after ECCE in 75 eyes and PHACO in 50 eyes were retrospectively compared. Results: Both ECCE and PHACO could repair the visual acuity to good status. The two methods had no difference in improving postoperative visual acuity. Both ECCE and PHACO is safe to treat complicated cataract. Conclusion: Both ECCE and PHACO could reach good visual acuity .Two kinds of combined surgery are safe, effective approaches. They have their respective difficulty of operation. Strict operating indications, selecting appropriate cases, and experienced operating skill are successful keys.
