| Objective To investigate the distribution of the mini-mental-status examination between of Xinjiang Uygur and Han nationalities in middle-aged and elderly population ,and understand their status of cognitive function.Method From July 2004 to July 2007, totally 8284 Uygur and Hans residents older than 50-year-old in area of Xinjiang were studied though the methods of multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling, in which, Uygurs were 4688(Males were 2324,females were 2364),Hans were 3596(Males were 1592,females were 2004).using mini-mental-status examination to survey questionnaires at the scene and households and assess their cognitive function.Results The total positive rate of MMSE with sample population, in XinJiang was 6.0%(95%CI:5.5%~6.5%),standard rate was 5.7%(95%CI:5.2%~6.2%), in which, Uygurs were 5.5%(95%CI : 4.8%~6.2%),standard rate was 5.0%(95%CI :4.4%~5.6%),Hans were 6.6%(95%CI:5.8%~7.4%),standard rate was 6.8%(95%CI:6.0%~7.6%),Hans were higher than Uygurs (P<0.05) ; Males were 5.0% (95%CI:4.3%~5.7%),standard rate was 4.4%(95%CI:3.8%~5.0%),females were 6.9%(95%CI:6.1%~7.7%),standard rate was 7.0%(95%CI:6.2%~7.8%), females were higher than males (P<0.05) ; The positive rate of MMSE in Uygur Males were 4.8%(95%CI:3.9%~5.7%),standard rate was4.0%(95%CI:3.2%~4.8%) ,Uygur females were 6.3% (95%CI:5.3%~7.3%), standard rate was6.0%(95%CI:5.0%~7.0%);Han Males were 5.2%(95%CI:4.1%~6.3%) ,standard rate was5.1%(95%CI:4.0%~6.2%), Han females were 7.7% (95%CI:6.5%~8.9%) ,standard rate was8.4%(95%CI:7.2%~9.6%),females were higher than males (P<0.05), The positive rate of Han females were the highest; The positive rate of MMSE tended to increase with aging(P<0.05) .Conclusion The total positive rate of MMSE in Xinjiang Uygur and Han nationalities in middle-aged and elderly population was 6.0%, standard rate was 5.7%. there are significant differences among the nationality, gender and age.
