Objectives:1. To develop a Chinese version of Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) after translating and adapting the original MMSE.2. To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of MMSE in stroke inpatients in order to provide a theoretical basis for its utility for patients with stroke in china. Methods:Translated, back-translated and made cultural adaptation of the MMSE upon original author’s agreenment to determine the Chinese version of MMSE. Estimated the content validity of the initial Chinese version of MMSE by a expert panel that is consist of 6 rehabilitation specialists, and then reached a expert consensus via discussing on the controversial items, determined the pilot Chinese version of MMSE. Further revision was been made based on the preliminary experimental results from 156 Community normal residents who aged 40-80 years in Fuzhou, Fujian. After completing all of these, the finial Chinese version of MMSE (MMSE-C) was been determined. To examine the reliability and validity of the MMSE-C, A 312 stroke patients in five hospitals (the Affiliated Rehabilitation Hospital of Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Affiliated Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, the Guangdong Province Hospital of TCM, the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Hospital of TCM) were assessed with the MMSE-C. They ranged in age form 40 to 80 years. Used the SPSS 18.0 for statistic analysis, the psychological characteristics of MMSE-C was evaluated by internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, content validity, item discrimination and construct validity.Results:1. The MMSE-C has good reliability. The Chronbach’s a=0.833, the ICC for test-retest reliability was 0.924.2. The validity of MMSE-C was acceptable. The content validity and item discrimination was well, and the construct validity was been validated by exploratory factor analysis. Conclusion:The results indicate that the MMSE-C is a reliable and valid screening instrument to assess stroke inpatients.
