ObjectivesThe study was to assess the oral health status and oral health behaviors of children and adolescents with intellectual disability in Chendu in order to provide epidemiologic data for health policy-marking.MethodsThe study sample comprised 215 children and adolescents with intellectual disability from 4 special school in Chengdu recruited from urban and suburban areas. The oral health status was examined for all subject and all of their parents were interviewed by a structured questionnaire.ResultsAmong 215 children and adolescents with intellectual disability , the prevalence rate of decayed/ missed/filled permanent teeth was 56.28%, the mean DMFT score was 1.47, the prevalence rate of decayed/ missed/filled deciduous teeth 50.00, the mean dmft was 1.46. in 6-12 years, the prevalence rate of gingival bleeding was 77.42%, and the caculus rate was 64.52%, in 13-18years, the prevalence rate of gingival bleeding was 89.87%, and the caculus rate was 85.73%. The oral health knowledge and behavior of children and adolescents with intellectual disability need to improved urgently. The particularity of intellectual disability and perceived oral health status influenced the utilization of dental services. ConclusionsSystematic community-based oral health promotion should be strengthened and preventive-oriented oral health care systems are needed, including promotion of further self-care practices.
