Objective The common oral diseases including dental caries and periodontal diseases. The results of the third national oral health epidemiological survey in 2005~2007 years old indicates that Chinese dental caries and periodontal disease status is still serious. The purpose of this study was to understand the oral health status and the awareness of oral health knowledge of the residents in poor mountainous areas of Yuexi County,Anhui province.Understand the incidence of dental caries and periodontal disease of the local residents,we can provide the basis for further guidance on oral health care. Methods According to the third national oral health epidemiological sampling survey,a poor village in Yuexi County,Anhui province was selected as the research object. We used census method to investigate 487 village residents.According to the actual age of the residents were divided into 6 age groups. The investigation contents include the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease prevalence. We used Epidate3.1 software to establish the database data, and analyzed the data using SPSS16.0.We used the dental caries prevalence as a statistical index, and the detection rate of periodontal disease in patients with gingival bleeding, dental calculus and periodontal pocket were the statistical index, too. Results A total of 487 residents in a poor mountain village were investigated, including 277 male and 210 female patients.(1)Caries situation: The total caries prevalence rate was 63.66%,and the mean DMFT of the subjects was 2.07 teeth. The caries prevalence rate of the group of 18 ~34 years old,35~44 years old,45 ~54 yearsold,45~64 years old,65 ~74 years old,and 75 ~83 years old were 68.63%,74.80%,64.46%,51.49%,52.63%,and 50.00%respectively.The prevalence rate of male and female caries were 60.65 % and 67.62%,and there was no significant difference between them(P>0.05).The prevalence of dental caries among the illiterate, primary and junior high school students and senior high school students were 51.10%,71.48%and 57.14%,and there was a significant difference between them(P<0.05).The number of decayed teeth in maxillary and mandibular teeth accounted for 38.42% and61.58% respectively. There was a significant difference in the rate of dental caries between the maxillary and mandibular teeth, and the caries rate of mandibular teeth was significantly higher than that of maxillary teeth.(2)Periodontal status: The detection rate of gingival bleeding, dental calculus and periodontal pocket were 14.37%,95.48% and 16.02%.The detection rate of gingival bleeding of the group of 18 ~34 years old,35~44 years old,45 ~54 years old,45~64years old,65 ~74 years old,and 75 ~83 years old were 25.49%?21.14%?12.65%?6.93%?7.90%,and 0.00%.The detection rate of dental calculus of the group of 18 ~34years old,35~44 years old,45 ~54 years old,45~64 years old,65 ~74 years old,and 75~83 years old were 88.24%?95.12%?98.19%?97.03%?94.74%,and 75.00%.The detection rate of periodontal pocket of the group of 18 ~34 years old,35~44 years old,45 ~54 years old,45~64 years old,65 ~74 years old,and 75 ~83 years old were 1.96%?7.32%?15.66%?32.67%?21.05%,and 12.50%.There was no statistical difference between male and female(P > 0.05),but the difference between the different educational experience was statistically significant(P<0.05).The total loss rate and the full mouth without teeth rate were 72.69% and 1.64%.The denture repair rate was5.34%.The rate of missing teeth in male and female were 76.53% and 67.62%,and there was a significant difference between them(P<0.05).The rate of missing teeth among the illiterate, primary and junior high school students and senior high school students were 96.15%?59.73% and 14.29%,and the difference between the different educational experience was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions The survey is the first oral health status of the poor mountain village residents, and the results can be used as the baseline data, which will provide the basis for the prevention and control of oral health in poor mountainous areas. The results showed that the prevalence rate of dental caries, gingival bleeding, dental calculus, periodontal pocket, and the full mouth without teeth rate were close to the results of the third national oral health epidemiological survey. But the rate of tooth loss was high, and the rate of denture repair was low.It shows that the oral health status of the residents in the village is poor, and the oral health prevention and control work is facing severe situation. In order to reduce the incidence of oral diseases and improve the oral health status of residents, the relevant departments should do a good job in the oral health education of the grassroots people, and develop practical oral health care programs to enhance the residents' ability of oral health care.We also should actively improve the poor mountainous areas of oral medical conditions, the residents regularly oral examination for early detection of problems and solve as soon as possible.
