Objective: To analyze and discuss the importance of humanities and social scienceseducation in higher medical colleges and universities; Compare the similarities anddifferences on humanities and social sciences education between domestic and foreignmedical colleges and universities; Analyze the existing problems of the humanities andsocial sciences education in domestic higher medical colleges and universities; Explore andanalyze the reform of humanities and social sciences education in our domestic medicalcolleges and universities.Methods: Research methods such as document study, theoretical research andcomparative analyses are adopted in this article, attempting to synthetically analyze theimportance of humanities and social sciences education in higher medical colleges anduniversities. Questionnaire investigations are used to the study of curriculum setting inhumanities and social sciences education of domestic higher medical colleges anduniversities, the humanistic qualities of students, the acquisition of humanities and socialsciences, the attitude towards humanities and social sciences education. Finally analyzes theexisting problems of the humanities and social sciences education in domestic highermedical colleges and universities, and then explores and provides new thoughts for furthereducational reform and development of humanities and social sciences education in highereducation of medical colleges and universities.Results: The importance of humanities and social sciences education mainly manifests in:The science and technology development needs the guidance of humanities social sciencesinformation; the transformation of educational pattern decides the necessity of humanitiesand social sciences education; the vocational features of medical personnel also proves the necessity of humanities and social sciences education.There has been a remarkable difference in humanities and social sciences educationbetween domestic and foreign medical colleges and universities, such as the schoolingmode, management and school running, students' origin, humanistic foundation, teachingmethods and improvement of the teaching staff structure etc. The investigation ofcurriculum setting of humanities and social sciences education of 46 domestic medicalcolleges and universities shows that the highest of humanities and social sciences courses is590 periods, as compulsory course, and the lowest is 120 periods, the average statistic is316.5. And twelve different courses are set at most and five at lowest, with 8.21 as theaverage. The compulsory courses of humanities and social sciences takes 14.16ï¼…, as thehighest of proportion to the total required courses, and 3.8ï¼…as the lowest, with 8.1ï¼…as theaverage.And the highest setting of humanities and social sciences as selective courses is 952periods, and the lowest is 70, average 320.5 periods. The maximum setting of humanitiesand social sciences is 32 different subjects, and the lowest, 2 subjects, average, 13.15.The selective courses of humanities and social sciences takes 45.71ï¼…, as the highestproportion to the total elective courses, and 28.57ï¼…as the lowest, with 41.67ï¼…as theaverage. Statistics research of 431 medical students shows the actuality that the students'humanistic quality is not high, their humanistic foundation is rather weak and theconstruction of humanities and social sciences curriculum needs to be strengthened.Conclusion: The education of humanities and social sciences plays the vital role in theoverall education in higher medical colleges and universities. There is a great difference inhumanities and social sciences education between domestic medical colleges and others inthe developed countries, such as the schooling mode, management and school running,students' origin, humanistic foundation, teaching methods and improvement of the teachingstaff structure etc. Right now, we have to face up to the problems like less importance wasattached to humanities and social sciences education, the poor humanistic quality, theweakness of humanistic foundation and the irrational setting of humanities and socialsciences curriculum, short periods of class hour, sole teaching method, weak teaching staffand so on.The thoughts of reforming the humanities and social sciences education in Chinesemedical colleges and universities are: place more emphasis on humanities and socialsciences education, strengthen humanities education, use the resources superiority of thosecomprehensive universities to broaden the humanities and social sciences education, reform teaching methods, emphasize on the cultivation of student's overall abilities, originate morespecialties or subjects on humanities and social sciences, establish reasonable knowledgestructure teacher troop.
