Background: The health human resource is the primary component of the health resource, while the nursing human resource is the important element of the health human system. Consequently, whether the nursing human resource has been rationally allocated is very important, for it not only affects the quantity and quality of health service, but also has impact on the development of health system and the extent of health demanding satisfaction, and influences the utilization efficiency of the whole health human system. There is a big gap between China and many foreign countries in the quality and quantity of nursing human resource. According to the statistical data from Ministry of Public Health, there were 1.266 million nurses in China in 2003, and doctor-nurse ratio was 1:0.68 which was upside down. Middle academic career accounted 64.5 %, which was still dominant in academic structure of the nursing staff, while bachelor's degree nurses only accounted 1.3 %. The quantity and quality of nursing human resource could not totally satisfy the people's increasing health demanding.It's very important to investigate and analyze the current status of nursing human resource in Sichuan province in order to carry out the "the outline development planning of nursing care delivery in China (2005-2010)" more efficiently, and also the result of investigating and analyzing is important to make policy in nursing field which is fit to the practical situation...
