ObjectiveBased on the investigation of the nursing human resources of Zhengzhou city in 2008, this study totally master the structure, distribution, supply and demand of nursing human resources and the employment system of the basic situation of nurses, and then forecast the nursing human resources in the target year. Meanwhile, in order to provide scientific basis for obtaining the biggest profits of nursing human resources and planning its development, this study analyse the equity of nursing manpower and research the distribution of it in the districts and the departments to find the problems.MethodsIn this study, an approach of the entire cluster sampling was taken, which based on all of the nurses who are in nursing services in Zhengzhou. The questionnaires were designed.The surveys on the nursing staff were undertaken, and the results were summaried in the end. After investigating the problems of the nurse staffing in Zhengzhou, the study comparatively analyze the differences of the composition and configuration between the formal nurses and the employed nurses. Then, this study establish model to predict the demand for nursing human resources in 2015 in Zhengzhou in order to provide a scientific basis for the rational development of nursing human resources.ResultsThe investigation involved 85751 nursing staff at all levels and types, of whom 128 were males, accounting for 1.30%, female 9779, accounting for 98.70%; nurses concentrated in the general hospital, accounting for 51.60% of the total number; young people mainly aged 26-35 accounted for 38.55% of them,18-25 years of age accounted for 26.32%; work experience concentrated in the 11-30 years, accounting for 58.91%; highly educated people and high-title talent are lack, only accounting for 0.10% and 0.72% of the total number; appointment system, caregivers and formal caregivers in terms of qualifications, titles and other differences were statistically significant.ConclusionsThe nursing manpower of Zhengzhou City is in a serious shortage. The nursing staff structure is irrational, and highly educated and professional titled nurses are less; the low education and the low title are in a large number, and there is a large number of non-academic, non-title officer; The employed nurses are lower than the formal nurses in education, job title etc; The distribution of the nursing manpower in Zhengzhou is relatively reasonable, but the regional distribution is unbalanced. Therefore, about the plan of nursing human in the future, we should not only adjust the quantity and quality of the nursing manpower but also the regional distribution to meet the requirements of nursing and promote the health development.
