Objectives: To analyze the status quo of health human resources in sampled rural areas of Gansu province and to explore effective demand, reasonable structure and distribution, related incentive methods and main training points of health human resources so as to provide scientific basis for health human resources program in Gansu province. Methods: Stratified sample was used to select 1007 families in Gansu province for investigation. Microsoft Access was used to establish database. Description analysis, T-test, x~2-test and Delphi research method were used. Results: (1) The vaccination rate of Four EPI Vaccines for the children of 1-7 years old was 74.62% in four sampled counties. With the increase of the net income per capita, this rate had an ascending trend. The proportion of 15 to 49 years old women who ever received gynecology examinations in four counties was 23.9%, a little lower than national average level (29.8%) and provincial average level (28.1%) in the Third National Health Service Survey. The average one-month morbidity rate in four counties was 249.08%o. The average one-month morbidity rate in two counties with higher income was higher than that of two counties with lower income. (2) The quality of healh human resources in four counties was low. The structure and distribution was also unreasonable. The average proportion of technical health staff with primary qualification and no qualification was over 80%. The average proportion of health staff with an education level of technical secondary school or with no diploma was the highest and the average proportion decreased from 73% in 2003 to 81% in 1990. The technical health staff in four counties mainly served at village level. The total amount of health staff at township level was stable.
