Propolis is a sticky resinous material collected by honey bees from various plant sources. Propolis has been used as traditional medicine because of its widely biological properties such as anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, aniinflammatory and antibiotic. Hyperlipidemia is a common cardiovascular disease and it induce arteriosclerosis (AS). Medicine in nanometer size will achieve a great of improved medicine utility. In this paper, both the effects of nanometer propolis and refined propolis on hyperlipidemia SD rats were studied, including the effects on the changes in the blood serum and liver. And in vitro nanometer propolis release was studied From the experiment the results were as follows:1. After nanometer propolis and refined propolis treatment,the level of TC, LDL-C and AI in hyperlipidemia SD rats were decreased comparing with model control group Especially AI levels in low,moderate and high dosage group were lower by 21.59%,23.48% and 40.04% respectively .And the high dosage group showed significant difference.2. After nanometer propolis and refined propolis treatment the HL and LPL activity in hyperlipidemia SD rats were increased. And nanometer propolis was more effective in increasing the activities of LPL and HL comparing with refined propolis. Especially, the moderate dosage of nanometer group showed significant difference with refined propolis group.3. After nanometer propolis and refined propolis treatment, the the liver mass index were increased and the fatty deposition were decreased comparing with model control group.4. Nanometer propolis was non-toxic material tested by maximum tolerance limit with ICR mouse.5. Nanometer propolis and refined propolis have some different effects on hyperlipidemia rats.6.In the sustained release study, 68% of propolis was released from carrier of nanometer propolis in 24h.We could conclude that both propolis in nanometer size and refined propolis have good effects on hyperlipidemia and liver. Contrast with refined propolis, nanometer propolis was more effective in increasing the activities of LPL and HL.
