Objective: To study the progress of treatment of patients with hypertension and the social significance of antihypertensive therapy, the prevalence of hypertension, hypertension complication and antihypertensive treatment were analyzed. Materials and Methods : 2500 patients with hypertension were analyzed retrospectively during 1980-1984, 1990-1994 and 2000-2004, all of patients were treated at the Department of cardiology in Tianjin Medical University Affiliated Petroleum Hospital. The questionnaire included patient's age, sex, admitted pressure level and Heart rate, past history, risk factors, laboratory examination, complication, treatment and so on. Then, clinical data were collected according to each element studied. The comparable data were analyzed statistically. Results : 1) During the three periods, the percentage of hypertension at the third stage were decreased (P<0.001). The percentage of isolated systolic hypertension and borderline hypertension were increased (P<0.001). The level of admitted systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure and admitted days were decreasing trend (P<0.01). The percentage of hypertension, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular inhibitants were decreased (P<0.001). 2) The prevalence of hypertension in this survey was increased obviously (P<0.001). 3) Complications: the percentage of the cardiovascular complication cases were the most (58.76%) during 1980-1984. During the same period, the percentage of simple hypertension and stroke cases was 22.60% and 16.95%, respectively. During 1990-1994, the percentage of cases with cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes mellitus (DM) and hyperlipidemia complication was 59.30%, 21.23%, 14.44%, 14.44%, respectively.
