Hospitals, together with their operations, produce the most concentrative medical information in the greatest quantity. With the computer, network and information technology applying to medical science, a new and developing marginal subject, Medical Informatics, gradually appears. Hospital Information System, HIS for short, has been generally acknowledged as an important branch of Medical Informatics in the medical field. In 1988, the noted American professor in that field, Morris Cullen, once wrote to define HIS: HIS is a system utilizing computer and network communication facilities to enable the organizations under the hospital to collect, memorize, handle, draw and exchange statistics of the patients' diagnoses and treatments information as well as administrative management information, at the same time satisfy the function requirements from all the authorized users. In hospitals, all the systems, which adopt computer system to realize departmental and partial information disposition, can be called HIS. The developing and researching of HIS system started early abroad, the current research focusing on Telemedicine and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), both belonging to the high-level applied stage of HIS system. HIS development got off to a late start in China, what's more, HIS applied tostomatological field emerged only recent years along with the continuous developing of stomatology. At present, several kinds of stomatological HIS have been developed, but most of them are facing community clinics, with the thought of design goes after small-sized and overall state. They are lacking in expert features, and different functional modules are not in common use; Furthermore, modules specialized in prosthodontical work cannot be found. The prosthodontics office takes on the prosthodontical tasks for the patients with tooth missing problems. The diagnosis and treatment work require high professional skills, and the information-awaiting disposition-is in various forms and a large number, especially there being much content requiring dynamic monitor forthwith. Due to these particular features, all the occurred systems are not perfect. Under these circumstances, we cooperate with computer specialists for the purpose of researching and developing a new method which answers the needs of prosthodontics, which covers the information disposition work of the prosthodontics office in clinical activities, in personnel files management, in storehouse property management, in economic cost accounting and so on, and which solves the problems of relative information's construction, disposition, storage, inquiry, statistics and dynamic monitor forthwith with advanced information technology. After analyzing the process of prosthodontics office, the medical record's writing standard, the personnel files management, the price plan's forming, the storehouse administrative rules, and the classification and statistics of work amount, we developed and established a C/S (Client/Server) structure network database with separate application and DBMS (Database Management System). The applied program adopts modularization structure, which is convenient for redeveloping and system escalation. DBMS's separating from the application enhances the whole system's OLTP (Online Transaction Process) ability and strengthens the application 's transplantation, meanwhile cuts the cost of system maintenance and further development, eliminates the obstacle that the appliedprogram cannot be used under different platform. In a period of testing and using, the system proved to entirely tally with the prosthodontics characters. It was easy for the doctors and nurses to use, with all its modules being firmly in motion. The data base structure was safe and reliable, especially in the aspects of monitoring patient's clinical activities, forming of price plan, classification and statistics of work amount, structuring electronic medical record and actively regulating medical resources, thus made the manager easily master c...
