In recent years, research on and implementation of Picture Achieving and Communication Systems (PACS) is a hot-point in modem hospital's development. With the progress of digital imaging, computer science, and network technology, PACS is an integrated system based on digitalization and network to acquire, display, store, transfer and manage medical images. PACS connects all medical imaging modalities into the hospital's network. Medical images generated by those modalities can be archived, transffered, and shared in the whole hospital, so PACS can improve the work-efficiency of the hospital. Since digitalization of storage and transmition of medical images is the first step for telediagnosis, PACS provide the base for telemedicine. How to build PACS for a hospital? The first step is to build physical network in the hospital. Then determine what protocol will be used to support PACS applications. The worldwide accepted protocol is Digital Imaging and Communications In Medicine (DICOM),and it becomes an intemational standard for communication of medical images. Almost all new medical modalities support DICOM protocol,so DICOM protocal provides guarantee for PACS's robusticity and extension.The implementation of DICOM is the critical step for successfully running PACS in the hospital. This thesis discusses how to implement basical services defined in DICOM protocol and put it into pratice. The primary study of this thesis include: 1) Study and discuss on DICOM application entity's architecture and DICOM working mechanism,and then proposed a model of DICOM network communications. 2) Based on the model, we discussed how to design and implement DICOM protocol,and developed a DICOM network library. 3) Using this library,we described the development of the most important DICOM service class: storage service class. 4) Furthermore, we proposed a method to standarlize a non-DICOM device,and solved the problem of a X- knife's data interface.
