DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) is an international standard that is widely conformed by PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). The implementation of DICOM is also a critical step for successfully running PACS. To establish the PACS based on the DICOM and make the PACS more expansible and interoperable, it is necessary to have a sufficient understanding for DICOM. Because PACS represents the upmost level in the application of medical information system, and it is also the certain trend of the hospital informatization development, so the research on the PACS that conforms to the DICOM standard is still an important task for the most PACS corporation.Based on the intensively research of PACS and current DICOM standard, this paper designs and realizes the image process module and the DICOM network communication module. The main work could be summarized as the following aspects:(a) Image display and process module: firstly, we deeply analyze the DICOM imaging formats and encoding methods, design the format conversion module that helps non-DICOM devices join in PACS. Secondly, because the medical image has a greater dynamic range, the common display can not display a whole image at a time, so we adopt a window display method, using the DIB BMP technology to realize the medical image display in common computer. Lastly, besides the basic functions such as image zoom, mirror, and revolve that are needed in image diagnosis by doctor, this module also implement the functions of window adjust and image characteristic parameters measure. In additional, we study the image enhancement arithmetic in particular, and introduce a Gaussian- Laplacian Pyramid arithmetic to deal with the contrast enhancement of image in multi-scale, and then compare the experiment result with the wave arithmetic that is popular in image processing at present, the result confirms the advantage of our arithmetic in the aspects of image contrast and noise restrain.
