Rooted in the deep valley of Huangshan Mountain, Xidi village reveals to the outside world an amazing living environment that is constituted by elegant architecture, breath-taking natural beauty, and peacefully harmonized lifestyle experienced by the residents for hundreds of years. The village plan, vernacular housings, and the relationship between the natural and built environment, are excellent examples of ecological architecture that demonstrates how to make best use of the natural condition in the construction process. This encourages the development of very rich and diverse local culture, a very important components of so-called Hui Culture.This thesis aims to study how the people of Xidi have employed the principles of their lifestyle and culture in the development of this amazing living environment. This also allows us to understand how the living environment has shaped and constrained the culture. This study is based on the theory of Environment-Behavior Studies. The research goal is achieved through a number of research activities, including literature review, survey, and on-site measurement and observation. The behavior of occupants provides information for understanding the history of the HUI vernacular housing. The relationship between the behavior of residents and the living environment can also be explained by and is reflected in how people perform their daily activities. This study contributes to the establishment of more healthy, harmony and sustainable living environment.
