Architecture represents the needs of people's life and manufacturing,evolution of human civilization , results of cultural and artistic pursuit, and embodiment and crystalization of people's prsuit of dreams in different historical periods. It clearly reflects the cultural evolution of different ethnic groups,regions and ages. Because of the rich and colorful cultural connotation of architecture itself,it can clearly and authenticly reflect the universality and individuality features of human cultures belonging to different ages and regions. Therefore,all the building structres, including palaces,official mansions,folk residence, temples,gardens,and even the scales,styles,and arrangement of the overall cities,exist as a sufficient and profound reflection of the strong traditional Chinese cultures of regions.As one of the oldest places of origin of the Chinese nation and a province where there exists so many ancient building structures on the ground,Shanxi has preserved an large amount of historic and cultural relics. Thus,it has long been called the cradle of ancient cultues.The period of Song,Liao and Jing is an important period for both Chinese history and Shanxi history.The confrontation and resistence between Song dynasty and Lial dynasty,the spreading and mingling of central-plain cultures and that of nomadic tribesmen in the North helped the formation of the unique culture styles at this period. Also,the achievements at this period are most splendid in the architectural history. The current preserved wooden building structues of Song-Liao-Jing period in Shanxi province account for 70%~80% building structures of such types in China. The Song-Jing buildings in Shanxi amount to more than 160,ranking as the top in the whole country.Among them, Song-Jing buildings in the southeast of Shanxi constitute nearly 45%.As the place where the Yan Di culture originated,the southeast of Shanxi charecterized its buildings with clear regional cultures by the geographical environment and historical cultures.The thesis consists five chapters.Chapter 1,the part of introduction introduces the source and the significance of the research. It summerizes the current research situation of charecteristics of the building structures in southeast of Shanxi province at the period of Song-Jing-Liao and the research methods and frames applied in the thesis.Chapter 2 skeches the influences of the geographic environment on buldings.In the category of geographic environment,it surveys the influences on landforms,climates from the natural environment of the region and politics,economics,cultures and other factors from the social environment. By the analysis and summary,it points that cultural factors hold a very important place in the lacal building structures.Chapter 3 is the main body of the thesis. It analyzes the cultural characteristics of building structures in Southeast Shanxi from the transformation of religitangons in southest Shanxi during the period of Song-Jing,to folk tales and folk custums. Also,it explains the origion and development of the local temples by giving examples of Trinity Hall,Two Immortal Temple.In chapter 4,a comparison will be made between the building structures in south Shanxi and those in the north,middle and south of Shanxi including the Jin temple in the middle of Shanxi province,Hua Yan temple in the north of Shanxi province and the GuanDi temple in the south of Shanxi province. From the perspective of geographical layout,Shape and artistic characteristics influenced by regional cultures,the associations and differences between the building structues in southeast Shanxi and the other three areas in the province at Song-Jing period.In the conclusion part,chapte 5,some personal understandings are summarized based on the analysis above.
