With rapid development of lift planning industry, the environment of lifting site has become complex increasingly, more and more super heavy lifts with hundreds or even thousands of tonnage weight are coming out. In order to arrange cranes overall and accomplish the lifting operations with safety, construction companies have higher requirements on lifting plan for accuracy, efficiency and reliability. Conversely, the lift planning is based on the conventional manners of manual computation and some CAD software presently, which makes planning lifts become strenuous and low-efficiency. So, it is significant to research the simulation system that combines the virtual reality technology and lift planning to obtain good results and become significant.Based on the understanding of lifts planning process, this thesis has a depth study on the crane selecting and crane locating algorithm. To simulate the lifts planning process, this paper also research on the 3D modeling of cranes. After study and analysis of OGRE (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) and the structure of cranes, this thesis builds the hierarchic tree and presents a new 3D parameterized modeling method of cranes. By integrating the interactive modeling using 3DSMAX and the geometrical graphics modeling, the new method can obtain parameterized 3D crane models.By analysis of factors involved in crane selection, this thesis presents a newly developed algorithm for selecting crane on construction sites, which takes into account the lifting capacity, lifting height, lifting radius, the clearance between crane's boom and equipments, and the ground bearing pressure.Based on the previous researches, this thesis develops a newly crane location algorithm in the virtual environment based on the previous researches, which can position the cranes according to cranes' dimension, the position of load and environment around automatically. Finally, this thesis integrates all the above studies into the 3D Lifting Simulation System. As modules of the system, they can assist the planners with lifts planning simulation. By observing the simulating process vividly, it can exclude infeasible project. The system can also output the simulation results automatically, So planners can compare the results of different simulating process to obtain the best one and improve the efficiency and reliability of lifts planning.
