The Research On Extensity Architecture In Of Along-street-developed Traditional Blocks

In recent years, it has been more and more recognized and valued about traditional blocks for their value on history, culture and art. With accelerated process of modernization and reconstruction in old cities, residents feel tired and bored of contemporary surroundings constructed by cement forest. Old blocks are preferred with their characters of rich area particularity and history linearity.This study proposed two different type of block space__ the along-coast-developed and the along-street-developed blocks. This proposal was based on research work on traditional blocks in Jiangnan area. For most published papers and research books regarding traditional blocks in Jiangnan area, people seem only focus on along-coast-developed old towns and villages. It might be caused by the normal understanding of Jiangnan, a nickname of water town. A big quantity of along-street-developed blocks in this area was forgotten by researchers. Less work was done. The architecture extensity of these two types differed greatly according to unlike medium of development. Therefore, the along-street-developed architecture extensity was selected as the case of study, Rongxiang in Wuxi, which has a history of more than 600 years, was selected as the case. It is aimed at proposing a theory based on the deep study. Rongxiang, together with other cases were selected and according theories were quoted.The study on along-street-developed blocks was done as following:1. Definition and specification of the two extensities.2. Study on humanities and chronologies of the defined along-street developed blocks.3. Based on the chronology, the architecture extensity research was organized and analyzed. The research was focused on normal shape, unit architecture group, neighborhood and extensity along streets & blocks, those were the main part of this study.4. Based on field study and reference of along-coast-developed blocks, comparison was done between the character of these two different architecture extensity. Conclusion was drawn on the difference and correlation impact on each other.The case was based on field study of traditional along-street-developed block——Rongxiang, field study of Zhoushanbang along-street developed block, Qingmingqiao coast blocks, Yanjiaqiao coast blocks were used for reference. Other references were also integrated in to push forward the study.
