The Design And Exploration Of Jinan Old City Residential Reconstruction

As a city with profound historical and cultural heritage, Jinan has long enjoyed the glorious reputation of'Spring City'. In terms of its landscape, higher than the northern part, the southern one is made up of mild hills with leaning plains and the plains deposited by the flowing water of the Yellow River. Owing to its unique location and environment, the residential architecture of Jinan City is fairly different from that of other cities. Distinguished from other residential patterns, Jinan's has its own characteristics with the combination of the sense and romance conveyed respectively by Siheyuan (quadrangle) in northern China and graceful construction in southern China. Jinan's residential architecture, to a degree, successfully presents the look of Jinan's history, culture and tradition. However, with the rebuilding of the old city and planning of the whole city, and in order to better-preserve the traditional architecture and improve the residential system, the residential reconstruction is reasonably a priority. This paper aims to probe into the design and development of the residential construction in the old city area by on-the-spot investigation and graphic illustration. Therefore, the cultural features of the residential construction is further analyzed and summarized into theories and principles.The present paper is composed of five chapters in total. Chapter one is the introduction, focusing on the statement of background information for the selected topic and the subject, goal and significance of the research. The related foreign and domestic theories and special conceptions are also explained in this chapter. The fact is pointed out that a few old traditions have been left over since the development of China's residential construction and how to continue the special features of China's residential construction is one of major matters that we need to think about. Part two is mainly devoted to the reasons for conducting reconstruction and redesign of the traditional architecture. Through the analysis of human, natural, and social factors, the paper makes it clear that the residential reconstruction is unavoidable and understanding the reasons of the reconstruction is prerequisite.Part three is centered on the analysis of the features of the old residential area in order to get an overall picture about Jinan's traditional residence.Part four is the keystone of the paper. Related to the complete planning, constructive patterns, environmental views, domestic living space and decoration, a concrete reconstruction proposal is put forward, which can both preserves the traditional characteristics of Jinan and reflects the advance of the time. Some technical matters of the construction design are mentioned in this part as well.Part five is the conclusion, which summarizes the exploratory design of the old city reconstruction and indicates the trend and space for the further growth of residential reconstruction with the guidance of scientific viewpoint on sustainable development.
