Research On The Cause And Mechanism Of Formation Of The Stockaded Villages In The Northwestern Area Of Hubei Province In The Ming Dynasty And The Qing Dynasty

The stockaded villages, although as the defensive architecture widely existing in the northwestern area of Hubei province, are just paid attention by academia community in recent years. Compared to the popular and disordered development of large-scale urban and rural construction and tourism today, the relic of stockaded villages is confronted with the danger of downfall. Being an exceptive genre of traditional architecture, stockaded villages are usually negelected in the past. Thus, to make full-scale and systematic researches on these stockaded villages is absolutely urgent and indispensable.First of all, this thesis starts from the various macro-factors which made the stockaded villages in the northwestern area of Hubei province come into being, and analyses the reason for the boom of stockaded villages in this region.Secondly, it analyses the time and space distributions of stockaded villages in this area, with the reference of historical literature and the help of aborative investigation, and deduces the distributing features of these stockaded villages and the causes which influence these distributions. Consequently, three stages in the development of stockaded villages in the northwestern area in Hubei province are confirmed. At the same time, the influence on the development of stockaded villages in this region is analysed from three aspects of the social factor, the physical geography and the military factor.Based on these above, researches on the formation mechanism of stockaded villages, combining with their specific conditions, are taken according to the division of type, the pattern of space, the constitution of defense, etc. And it is ascertained that the stockaded village in the northwestern area in Hubei province is one kind of the traditional defensive settlements, and consists of two kinds of stockaded villages for military purpose and for civil protection, mainly with the linear periphery defense. Both forms of the external and internal spaces of stockaded villages, besides the various factors which influence the being features of villages, are analyzed in detail, by using specific examples. Moreover, a further step is taken deep into the research about all essentials which constitute the defensive system of stockaded villages. This research covers the wall and door of these villages, the monomer architecture, along with the measure, structure, modus operandi, and also material choosing of the living facilities, in addition, the reason influencing all these elements. Meanwhile, a particular analysis is done by combining with three examples of real villages with different types.In the end, by the study of many aspects, such as the building process, organization management, the relationship between the stockaded village and different levels of residents, and so on, a vivid village is revealed. Accordingly, the research on the cause and mechanism of formation of the stockaded villages in the northwestern area of Hubei province in the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty is finally perfected.
