As an embodiment of the traditional Chinese ideology and culture-Chu culture, the architecture of ancient towns and villages in Hubei Province shapes the aesthetics of traditional dwellings in Hubei Province and surrounding areas and forms its own characteristics in the layout design, size, shape and structure, decorative patterns with the influence of philosophical thinking of Confucianism, buddhism and taoism, national integration and the change of the times.Architectural philosophy therein is summarized in this paper for the contemporary architectural design to draw and learn from and to draw people’s attention to the new focus on traditional dwellings in ancient towns and villages of Hubei Province.Starting from the origin of the architecture of Hubei Province and surrounding areas, the paper expounds its inherent philosophy which is under the influence of Confucianism, buddhism and taoism, through summarizing and analyzing Confucianism featuring the unity of heaven and man, etiquette and golden mean,Taoism symbolized by clarifying Tao by resorting to metaphorical meaning of water, spatial aesthetics and concepts of Feng Shui and Yin and yang,as well as witty words, artistic conception, combination of practice and agricultural labor of the Chan sect. And then the paper absorbs the characteristics of local dwellings by means of selectively drawing and learning from traditional architectural philosophy and rich decorative patterns,so as to provide ways of and approaches to issues of Chinese contemporary architecture.
