There has been a contradiction between protecting and taking apart Hutong and Siheyuan before, but now it has been transformed to how to protect and develop the value of the historical and cultural heritage, and how to improve people's living environment and life quality on the premise of protection.The protection way about Siheyuan is absolutely different from the fixed protection way about historical relics and antiques.The existence of constructions as one kind of material form is not influenced by the outside changing.As days go by, it can not deal with the changing of people's life and working style with the civilization development, and degenerates into old constructions gradually, just like the wounds on organism.Transformation and reusing can make a rebirth of old constructions on shape and function, that is called regenerative design.The theory moral character of construction typology lies in its strong practicality, not the pure theory description.Its starting point of research aims at reality explicitly. It has much practical and theoretical significance because it provides methods and ways for solving problems about preserving historical heritage effectively, continuing the city cultural pulsation and seeking unification of multiplicity and integrity of city constructions in the developing urban construction process,just like function replacement, putting new liquor in old bottles, grafting between the new and the old, transiting indirectly. This topic takes the typology method as study tool to research Siheyuan in the old city of Beijing from theory and practice aspects. It tries theoretically to explore the way and the basis for renewing Beijing Siheyuan construction, and tries practically to seek the method and the pattern of renewing Siheuan to adapt to the contemporary city life. These two aspects of exploration both can be summed up as the construction form problem finally.
