Diagram in architecture, means to use the analytical elements to trace, analogize or notate the information or phenomena, in order to find a rational way from research to design. It's the materialization of the process of thinking, the visualization of the invisible, and the clarification of the chaotic. In this thesis, I will try to uncover the essence of diagram trough a series of case study, documentary research and practice. My thesis is composed of eight parts:1. Analysis of the diagrammatic examples by foreign architects.2. The interpretation and classification of diagrams in architecture3. The mechanism and principal of diagrammatic analysis4. The reality of architectural diagrams in China5. The critics developed for diagrams6. Analog of the representative diagrammatic research by the western architects in detail7. The application of diagrams in design through two of my projects8. How to enhance the conscious of diagram among architectsIn a world full of explosive information, and a society increasingly driven by the global capital, the methodology of diagram could be an effective way of finding a clear and convincing clue for architecture based on systematical research. And for China, while the architectures are mostly determined by so called inspirations or extremely occasional factors, the methodology of diagram, which is neutral and calm, could be a cure to the frivolous attitude. With the points and lines, the architects will be able to focus on the rationality of the"process"rather than merely the"results"...
