Marine radar simulator has been playing an important role in maritime education and training after it came into being. Radar simulator has been demanded higher performance and reality along with rapid development of marine industry. And the explicit standards are clearly defined by STCW 78/95 Convention.At present, the echo generating method of most marine radar simulator is: the initial data, such as coastline, racon and SART, etc. is acquiring from the sea chart by digitizer. Then the intersection point coordinates of scanline and outline are caculated. Finally, the echo images are generated through the proper transformation. This method is relatively simple, but there anr some differences between the simulated echo and real echo, occlusion relations of objects and the reflection of electromagnetic wave on objects can not be reflected.3D scene database includes more inforamtion than sea chart. Based on the previous research at home and abroad, the paper develops radar simulation software based on 3D scene database by using the thought of ray tracing algorithm and diffuse reflection model for reference. Major tasks of the paper includ the following aspects:1. Gives an analysis of 3D modeling tools and 3D scene database, Converts the form of 3D scene database in navigation simulator from OpenFlight into 3DS, then accesses 3DS files and acquires related information of models.2. Referencing the ray tracing algorithm, calculates echo position of object based on ray-triangle intersection, calculates echo intensity based on diffuse reflection model.3. Studies the algorithms of rendering afterglow, noises and blind sector.4. Develops radar simulation software based on VC++6.0 and OpenGL.
