Hospital facilities have experienced huge developments during the pasttwo decades in China. This thesis explores several key factors that impact thehospital planning and thus, advances some architects and methods from abroad point of view. In the first part of the thesis, the general status of many hospitals inChinese cities and the characters of hospital construction are investigated anddescribed. Based on this investigation, some important factors behind thephysical development of hospitals are analyzed. In these factors, land usagehas the most direct impact on the facility planning and formalization. Thus,according to the land use situation and purpose, the hospital construction iscategorized into three types extension, redevelopment and relocation.Then the author sums up five main morphological types of Chinese hospitalwith illustration of examples. This research is provided a wide scope ofhospital planning. The general planning is defined as the schematic planning on both the 3Dspatial axis and the time axis in this thesis. And this schematic planning sets upplans for implements by stages. Hospital general planning is a kind ofsystematic work that comes down to multi-subject knowledge and influencedby multi-factors, such as medical policy, economic status, management mode,construction ability, etc. The author focuses on two important aspects for deepdiscussion, function layout and circulation arrangement. Many case studiesused in the thesis for illustration also are also useful for the resolve of practicalproblems. Further studies are conducted on some unsettled issues in the field ofhospital planning; among these are high-rise hospital development, mostefficient hospital scale, the future roles of hospitals and the conflict betweenthe spatial limitation and the long-term development.
