When faults occur on the HV transmission line,accurately and timely locating the fault position can rapadly eliminate the fault and resume the power supply . It is of great importance to ensure a proper operation of the system. The paper first analyzed existing one-terminal fault location algorithms then presented a new algorithm based on differential equation using voltage and current samples only taken at one end of the line. The EMTP simulation test shows this algorithm can improve the accuracy of fault location evidently, In contrast with other methods it is fast, simple and easy for engineering use. The precision and reliability of data transmission is the precondition of accurately fault locating.As a part of the research of fault locating device the paper developed a set of MMI having Ethernet interface. It was designed humanly and easy to manipulate.Using the Earthnet the efficiency of data transmission is largely improved.
