The improvement of people' s living standards, as we stride forward the network civilization, has affected our living state severely. At the same time, the family makeup and the coexistence with each other has also changed drastically. Therefore, the space pattern of dwelling has to change to meet the new need. In our current residential space, however, we have difficulty in creating a pleasant ambience for neighbourhoods. As the Chinese saying goes, neighbours nearby are more helpful than kinfolks far away. The street-space provides more chance for people to communicate with each other, which indicates that people have more interest in the activities of each other. Activity occurs on the street, providing opportunities for people to relax, meet and communicate.Firstly, the thesis focus on the historical evolution of the space of street-lane of residential quarters in XI' AN which comes to the point that the regionalism plays an important role in city development, and sums up the regional characteristics of the space of street-lane of residential quarters in XI' AN. Secondly, through the exploration of the status quo of street-lane of residential quarters in XI' AN, the thesis points out the peculiarity of the street-lane and the problems at present, on which a proposal is made through the analysis of its generation and background. Further more, in the thesis, a conception of tradition-alike model in residence design is proposed. Through analysing the character of the space of traditional street, some concrete measures are also discussed in the attempt to maintain and continue the traditional city patterns and the space of street-lane.The thesis was divided into six sections. Chapter 1 is about exordium; Chapter 2 looks into the relationship among city, city residence and the space of street-lane;Chapter 3 reviews the evolution of street-lane of residential quarters in XI' AN; Chapter 4 analyses the characteristic of street-lane of residential quarters in XI' AN. Chapter 5 explores the status quo of street-lane of residential quarters in XI' AN. Chapter 6 propounds a conception of tradition-alike residence design, and discusses on some concrete conceptions in tradition-semblance district design.
