The modern commercial pedestrian district is a combination of urban space environment and advanced management idea, which can bring notable economic, cultural and social benefit to the city. It is not only a shopping place, but a platform for public recreation and culture in city, the design of which has a direct influence on public life quality. So the research on spatial organization of commercial pedestrian district is an important program of great theoretical value and realistic meaning. It is divided into three dimensions: cognition and behavior, function and pattern.By introducing the concept of"Circulation", the dynamically continuous path to lead and carry the flow behavior of human or object, the research on organizations of cognition and behavior, functional arrangement and spatial form integration would be focus on a signal object to discuss. According to environment-behavior studies and System science, the essential connotation of circulation is illustrated and the effects of circulation are discussed in three ways: guiding spatial cognition, effecting spatial efficiency and controlling spatial order. The circulation design as the start point and core of the organization of commercial space, influenced by consumption transformation, management innovation, functional compound and intensive land use in modern commercial environmentOn that basis, the circulation system is translated into guidance system, linkage system and axis line system respectively. Based on existing problems, three requirements of space organization in circulation are analyzed. Firstly, circulation as a guide system offers guidance to cognition, flow behavior and spatial experience of consumer, by which environmental elements are organized to form logic, convey image and theme. It makes the commercial space more intelligible and imageable. Secondly, circulation as a linkage system offers connection to commercial function, traffic function and common function, by which functional spaces are related to each other, attract passenger flow and form level. It makes the various function spaces more harmonious and efficient. Finally, circulation is the basic line that control site form, building and street layout. Form elements are organized to form space sequence and structure according to circulation. It makes spatial form more integrated and ordered. In conclusion, based on actual cases analysis and design principles summarized, circulation design methods are given from three aspects: conceiving circulation by environmental elements inducing, generating circulation by functional elements arrangement and layouting circulation by ordering form elements. Simultaneously, four basic spatial organization models of the modern commercial pedestrian district are summarized. It is hoped to serve as a foundation for further research, and then achieve these three objectives of clear guiding, economic efficiency and system integrity in commercial space design.
