In recent years, the construction of highway has been rapidly developed in China, but still not formed a unified network system. Both manual and semiautomatic charging systems cannot make full use of its scale with the shortcomings of inefficient, incompatibility, and incompatible with charging standards and so on. Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC) has advantages in increasing traffic efficiency of toll stations, alleviating traffic jams and reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emission when vehicles waiting. At present, most ETC Systems in China make use of the system of license plate recognition based on RFID technology, with the limitations of inconsistent standards, short transmission distance, high cost.Based on the ZigBee short-range wireless communications technology, the thesis designs and obtains a prototype of ETC system, which get relevant data through the short-range wireless data communication between vehicle terminal and coordination of toll stations, then omit vehicle identification system of traditional ETC, and achieve intelligent toll collection through treatment of tolling data with the help of computer network. The prototype system includes two key modules, ZigBee short-range wireless communication module and charging management prototype module. After joining wireless network of toll stations covered by coordinator, vehicle terminal receives broadcast information from coordinator, accurately judges driving direction of vehicles (entry and export) through software program, and sends this message as well as smart card numbers to coordination in strings (Smart Card Numbers– Inlet Numbers– Outlet Numbers). Coordinator sends information received just now to toll LAN through serial ports. Charging management prototype module achieves functions of deduction of toll fees, generation of black and yellow list, inquiry and statistic of vehicle flow in each toll station, query of user information, and so on.The thesis describes basic the oretical knowledge and development of ETC systems at home and abroad, simulates highway traffic process on basis of ZigBee short-range wireless communications, realizes bidirectional data communications between star network center and terminal nodes safely and unfailingly, records running information of vehicle terminals. The development platform adopts wireless transceiver module of JN5121-xxx- Myy series of Jennic Company, realizes short-range wireless communications, designs and develops ETC prototype systems, and therefore verifies the feasibility to take use of ZigBee technology in highway no-waiting toll collection system. The thesis introduces design and realization process in detail. Laboratory testing results show achievements of the contents of proposal and preset targets.
